Coconut water is a refreshing natural drink that provides fluids along with several electrolytes, making it a popular choice for staying hydrated. But when it comes to dehydration, is coconut water really better than oral rehydration solution (ORS)?

Experts say the answer depends on why you need to rehydrate. For everyday hydration, coconut water can be a good beverage choice. However, when the body has lost significant amounts of water and electrolytes, particularly because of diarrhoea or vomiting, ORS is the more appropriate option.

One of the important differences between the two is their electrolyte composition. Sodium plays a key role in replacing fluids and electrolytes lost by the body. Coconut water contains potassium and other minerals but generally has much less sodium than ORS. ORS, on the other hand, is specially formulated with the right balance of glucose and electrolytes to help the body absorb and replace fluids lost during dehydration.

Coconut water also contains potassium, magnesium, calcium and small amounts of other nutrients, including vitamin C and amino acids. It can therefore be a refreshing option as part of normal fluid intake. However, claims that coconut water can protect heart health, reduce inflammation or fight infections should not be taken as established medical benefits, as stronger evidence from human studies is needed.

When dehydration occurs because of diarrhoea or vomiting, coconut water should not be used as a substitute for ORS. While coconut water does provide fluid and some electrolytes, its natural composition is not standardised for treating dehydration. ORS is specifically designed to replace the water and electrolytes lost during diarrhoeal illness.

There is also a reason for some people to be cautious with coconut water. It is naturally rich in potassium, so people with conditions that affect the kidneys' ability to remove potassium from the body, particularly those with chronic kidney disease or high potassium levels in the blood, may need to limit their intake. They should check with their doctor about how much is appropriate for them.

So, for a hot day or everyday hydration, coconut water can be a refreshing choice. But when dehydration is linked to diarrhoea, vomiting or significant fluid loss, reach for ORS rather than relying on coconut water alone.
