Rain to continue in state for next five days; Seven districts on yellow alert

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a possibility of rain in Kerala for the next five days. Yellow alert has been issued in seven districts today. Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are on yellow alert. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted.

Heavy rain is defined as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is received in 24 hours. The IMD has informed that strong winds with a speed of 40 to 50 kmph are possible in isolated places in Kerala today (09/08/2026) and tomorrow (10/08/2026).

Alert issued to strong winds

1. Strong winds are the state-specific disaster that causes the most damage and loss of life in Kerala. There is a possibility of accidents due to uprooting of trees and branches falling in strong winds. Under no circumstances should you stand under trees or park vehicles when there are wind and rain.
2. Dangerous branches of trees in your yard should be cut down. If you notice trees in danger in public places, inform the relevant local bodies.
3. Unsecured billboards, electric posts, flagpoles, etc., as they are also likely to fall in the wind, strengthen or dismantle them properly when there is no wind or rain. Do not stand under or near them or park vehicles when there are wind and rain.
4. Tools and other objects that may fall in the wind, such as ladders leaning against walls or other objects, should be tied with ropes.
5. Windows and doors should be closed as soon as the wind starts blowing. Do not stand near windows and doors. Avoid standing on the terrace of the house.
6. Those living in thatched, sheeted or unsecured buildings should move to safer buildings as requested by the authorities during the warning period.
7. Local self-government bodies, revenue officials and public representatives should take the initiative to shift such people identified under the local body level disaster mitigation plan to relief camps at the required stages.
