24-hour surveillance in area; Airport Squad introduced in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Airport Squad has been set up to ensure that no waste is dumped within a four-kilometre radius of the airport in the capital city, said the corporation secretary. The corporation set up the 24-hour squad following the intervention of Human Rights Commission Justice Alexander Thomas.

On April 15 last year, an Oman Airways plane was hit by a hawk near the Thiruvananthapuram airport, causing damage to its engine. The commission directed strict action on a complaint filed based on newspaper reports in this regard. The corporation report says that the Harithakarma Sena has been deployed to collect and fully dispose of inorganic waste from the houses in the area. Kitchen bin systems have been installed in the houses in the area. Five aerobic bins have also been installed at Sulaiman Street, Vallakadavu and NS Depot for the disposal of organic waste.

The Municipal Health Inspector was present when the commission considered the case. Justice Alexander Thomas directed the municipal authorities to ensure that inorganic waste is not dumped in areas near the airport under any circumstances. The action was taken on a complaint filed by human rights activist Ragam Rahim.
