Centre likely to convene special Parliament session on Delimitation and Women's Reservation Bills

NEW DELHI: The Centre is likely to convene a three-day special session of Parliament to discuss the Delimitation Bill and the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill. According to reports, the government has sought the views of Opposition parties, including the Congress, on holding the session. It is likely to be held on August 16, 17 and 18. The Congress has reportedly told the government that it will convey its stand after consulting other Opposition parties.

Both amendment bills failed to pass during the Budget session in April after the government failed to secure the required two-thirds majority. Of the 528 MPs present in the House, 298 voted in favour of the bills, while 230 voted against them. The bills were defeated by 54 votes. National media reports indicate that the NDA is now attempting to secure the necessary numbers with the support of rebel MPs from the Trinamool Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction.
